July 2008

We are having a Fourth of July "open house" at the shop all day this Friday, 4th of July. New Mexico Tea Company will be giving away free iced tea, and watermelon to anyone who stops by. (add to calendar)

There is new artwork up in the store by two local artists: Oil Monotypes by Jill Christian and Photographs by PD Rearick.

Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by painting on a smooth surface. The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing-press. Jill only produces one print from each monotype. ($345)

PD Rearick photos are panoramic in nature, made from many small images. They were shot with real film, and developed by hand in PD's studio. ($120)

Featured Products:

rightRED: Blood Orange: Blood Orange Rooibos is our most popular herbal blend. It has many levels of flavor ranging from the citrus orange with a light vanilla undertone, to the malty rich rooibos base. Blood oranges usually have pitted skin and are smaller than an average orange. The juice is sweet with a somewhat bitter aftertaste and less acidic than that of regular table oranges. ($3/oz)

-

WHITE: Jasmine Needle: Silver Needles refers to the buds of the tea plant. Because white tea is the least processed type of tea, you can still see the fibers on the individual buds. This tea has the addition of jasmine, which is one of the most popular additives to tea. This tea is a great alternative to the green jasmines if you don't like the grassy taste of green tea. ($7/oz)

-

BLUE: Midnight Blue: This is a perfect blend of calming ingredients if you're looking to avoid chamomile. The lemon and mango flavors meld nicely with the two main ingredients, lavender and lemon grass. Lavender is most often used for perfuming, but it is also an excellent plant for infusions and has an agreeable floral flavor.($3.75/oz)

Tea History:

In 1770, the "Tea Act" gave the East India Company a monopoly on all tea imports to the colonies in America. Three years later, in retaliation, a mob dumped East India Company tea into the Boston Harbor. Parliament in 1774 passed a series of laws that the colonists called the Intolerable Acts to punish the colonists for this destruction of property. These measures limited the powers of the Massachusetts assembly and local town meetings, closed the port of Boston, and required colonists to provide housing and supplies to British soldiers. In response to this and other laws, the Continental Congress was set up by the colonist to link together a series of shadow governments from all the colonies. In 1775 the shadow governments of each colony took control and kicked out the British rulers, igniting a civil war with Britain. It was not until July 4th 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence that the war was escalated from a civil war to a war of independence. The War raged on for five more years, and fighting finally ended in Yorktown in 1781, with a treaty signed with the British in 1783.
