July 2009 Newsletter

Edition: July 2009

Dear [fname] [lname],

This July marks a big step for New Mexico Tea Company. In short, we will start serving tea on our back patio. Customers have been asking us to serve tea for 2.5 years now (since we opened), and I finally figured out a way to make it work in our small space and to be a unique experience for Albuquerque tea drinkers.

One of the main reasons that it has taken so long for us to make this step is that I did not want to interfere with the retail experience we offer our customers. Rest assured that you will still be able to come into the store and buy one ounce of this, four ounces of that, and a pound of your favorite. The two areas will be independently staffed, so you will not have to wait for someone to finish drinking their tea before you make your purchase.

The new area of the store will be called  "The Tea Bar at New Mexico Tea Company" if  speaking about it in relation to the store, or "New Mexico Tea Bar" if being referred to on its own. To begin with we will have four small tables in our back covered patio. This means that at popular times there may not be room to sit and stay. There will be no reservations, and no waiting area. Because this may be inconvenient, we will offer carry-out service of our menu.

The concept behind the menu is simple: to offer a few excellent morsels to complement your tea. To begin, we will offer blueberry muffins, scones, and fruit. If these are not the best scones you have ever had, or the freshest fruit, then we will adjust until they are. As for the tea offered, you will be able to select from any of our teas. That's about 150 and growing. The Tea Bar will be open three days a week--Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 AM till last seating at 5:30 PM. The Grand Opening will be Friday, July 17th.

Monthly Contest:
I find myself typing this newsletter through a spotty satellite connection in the Gila National Park. Therefore I am completely unprepared to announce the winner of the recipe contest, or to set up voting on the tea-shirt contest. This means that you have another month to enter the tea-shirt design contest. I have got some great designs so far, and will be posting some more up on the page.
Featured Products:
Double walled glass cup

Double Walled Teacup: Experience your next cup of tea in style. These double walled teacups are designed for functionality as well as style; the air between the two layers of glass helps to insulate both your hands and the tea. Set of Two: $15

Wuiy Rock Oolong

Wuyi Rock Oolong: If you've heard WuYi tea in reference to weight loss, that's because it is packed with powerful antioxidants and polyphenols, which promote healthy weight loss.

This tea is grown in the WuYi Mountains of the Fujian Province, where the warm moisture and high elevation is perfect for producing this delightful Oolong. $6.50/oz

SummerOur new blend this month is an iced delight called Lucky Summer. It has no caffeine so you and all family members and friends can drink it all the hot summer day long. A refreshing, light, and thirst-quenching blend of South Africa bush tea, peaches, strawberry, apple, peppermint, rose hips, and lemon grass.

Also new this month: Thai Lemon Ginger Rooibos. Caffeine-free, it includes South Africa red bush, calendula petals, lemon grass, lime leaves, ginger, and pineapple.

Tea History:
Yixing pottery, also known as zisha (purple clay) is a unique traditional Chinese ceramic art. It represents a type of ceramic ware with characteristics of both pottery and porcelain. Generally, the inside and outside surface of Yixing ware exhibit a natural texture, displaying the color and luster of refined pottery without any added glaze. A legendary folk tale suggests the origin of this unique art: Once a strange monk roamed to Dingshu, Yixing, where he hollered to passers-by: "Riches and honor for sale!" The villagers, however, all sneered at him, and no one paid him any attention. So the monk changed his cry, "Nobody wants to buy honor, but how about riches?" The villagers were now interested and the monk led them to a spot outside the village. There the villagers found marvelous, multicolored clay rich in iron. They used the clay to make pottery ware which became world-renowned, and a never-ending source of wealth for them.

Next week, a small shipment of Yixing teapots will arrive in our store. They are intended for use with one type of tea so that the natural properties of that tea soak into the unglazed surface over years of use. "These teapots have experienced centuries of development, but their central purpose remains unchanged. Tea culture is an aesthetic experience, and the zisha teapot is perhaps the ultimate integration of function and aesthetics."

Sincerely,
David Edwards
