Paul-David Rearick

"Like many photographers I found my first camera in my youth and immediately made it the medium of choice, and took to exploring my neighborhood more ambitiously. After high school I enrolled at Columbia College Chicago where I began fully experimenting with anything not “classically beautiful.” The toned print, assemblage, and mirror projects all have their roots in these college experiments. Having a deep love of architecture I developed a portfolio and was hired by Hedrich Blessing, a 78-year-old studio of architectural photographers. I assisted three photographers in my nearly five year tenure there, who revolutionized the way I look at and for images, namely Steve Hall, Craig Dugan, and Nick Merrick.

As a full time assistant I became well versed in architectural details, traveled frequently to national job sites, once internationally, and was mentored in some of the business aspects of running a photography company. By being exposed to such a variety of scenarios, from law office interiors to major league stadiums, high-end residences to designer furniture I developed confidence and critical thinking that was immediately exercised in my own fine art work. To be Nick Merrick’s full time assistant required me to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he runs his branch of Hedrich Blessing.

In November 2006 I left the company, moved to Albuquerque, and began to develop the many ideas that were only being mildly exercised while working as an assistant photographer. I used the opportunity to build up my portfolio by submitting work to shows, galleries, and hosting my own exhibitions in rented spaces. With full darkroom facilities and many prints worth showing I registered as a business in July 2007 and have been generating income by the sale of my fine art work and commissions. I’ve been an active volunteer for Albuquerque’s, “The Cradle Project” in the last year as a photographer and event organizer, which has broadened my horizon on the complications and successes in the art business. Not only has it been encouraging to use my work to inspire and live on, but also to give back to the community.

September 2008 marks a new adventure as I uproot from New Mexico to begin the MFA program at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where many of the themes developed here will be expanded upon more critically."
