Named after the 1830's British Prime Minister, Earl Grey is the western world's most popular tea. Earl Grey has traditionally meant any type or blend of tea which is scented with oil of bergamot, a fruit resembling an orange found in the Mediterranean region. Corfu, Greece was the center of the bergamot trade during the same decades it was headquarters for the British Mediterranean fleet, commanded by Lord Grey in London.

Perhaps more than any other tea, Earl Grey appears to have been the beverage of choice for one fictitious character after the next. From James Bond, to Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, to Sir Leigh Teabing of the DaVinci code, Earl Grey holds a special place in the world of storytelling.

Earl Grey Jasmine Monkey KingNew Mexico Tea Company Earl Grey Jasmine Monkey King
The Monkey King legend from 1500s China holds that Monkey was born of rock and was a mischievous fellow who demanded immortality from the gods. The story is a pseudo-historical account of a monk (Xuanzang) who went to India in the 7th century to seek Buddhist scriptures to bring back to China. The principle story consists of eighty-one calamities suffered by Monkey and his guardians Tripitaka and Sandy, who are monks, and Pigsy, a pig.

Rooibos Earl GreyNew Mexico Tea Company Rooibos Earl Grey
Although Earl Grey is normally associated with England and good strong Ceylon and Chinese teas, this unique variety is closely tied to South Africa, in particular the town of Howick. The reason for this is two fold. For one, the Rooibos that forms the base of this blend is grown near the town. The second is that the town is named after Earl Grey himself. In fact, history tells us that Henry George Grey, the 3rd Earl of Grey was also known as British Colonial Secretary Viscount Howick. Howick lent his name to the new town as it was being formed near the Mgeni River in KwaZulu Natal back in the 1800's. The town developed as European settlers moved to the country and began to populate the more remote corners of the territory. Howick accommodated the needs of the droves of settlers and wagon-drivers that crossed the river as they went looking for farmland. The weary travelers would stop for refreshment, supplies and a well needed break from the trail.

Smoky Earl Grey | OrganicNew Mexico Tea Company Smoky Earl Grey | Organic
Legend claims that the smoking process for lapsang souchong was discovered by accident. During the Qing dynasty, an army unit passing through Xingcun camped in a tea factory filled with fresh leaves awaiting processing. When the soldiers left and the workers could get back into the premises, they realized that to arrive at market in time, it was too late to dry the leaves in the usual way. So they lit open fires of pinewood to hasten the drying. Not only did the tea reach the market in time, but also the smoked pine flavor created a sensation!
