Hojicha has been one of the most commonly enjoyed teas in Japan since its discovery in the 1920's. Because of its low-caffeine property, it has been enjoyed by children, the elderly, and even patients in hospitals.

Brewing Instructions:

Bring filtered or spring water to 160°F. Add 1 tsp of tea leaves to an 8oz cup. Pour boiling water over the tea leaves and let steep 2 minutes.

I absolutely love the flavor of this tea. It has a nice roasted "woodsy" flavor to it. Unfortunate part is, because it's been roasted, many of the positive effects of the tea have either been removed or reduced. Either way, this is one delicious tea. It's even better when you add honey or sugar.

The first thing I noticed was the size of the leaf--bold as the saying goes. This kind of tea is readily available in Berkeley so I can compare it with the tea from the grocery. It is superior in aroma and body. It is my ideal afternoon tea.

Leaves are surprisingly large for a roasted tea. Good roast profile, not overpowering but not too delicate. I prefer adding more leaves than are called for to really pump up the flavor into the "amazing" range. This tea is good without additives, but would not contrast with them too much. A well-priced hojicha! If you like this, also consider branching out into Lapsang Souchong (pine-roasted black tea) or Genmaicha (green tea with brown rice, distinctive nutty flavor).

I always smell this tea before I brew it because the smell is so wonderful. This and the Genmai Cha are my two favorite green teas from NMTC.
